Are Seiko Mods Legal? What You Need to Know Before You Buy

Are modified Seiko watches legal to buy and import? We break down trademark law, warranty, customs, and resale rules for Seiko mods.

One of the most common questions around modified Seiko watches: are Seiko mods legal? Short answer: yes, as long as a few clear rules are followed. Here's the full breakdown.

1. Trademark law โ€” the most important point

A mod is legal as long as it carries no third-party trademarks. In practice:

  • โœ… Allowed: A Sub-style watch with the MedoMods logo, no logo at all, or a generic design
  • โŒ Not allowed: The same watch with a Rolex crown or the "Submariner" name on the dial

Selling a watch bearing someone else's registered trademark is trademark infringement (in Germany, where MedoMods is based, this falls under ยง 14 of the German Trademark Act, MarkenG โ€” and the underlying principle is the same across the EU and most other jurisdictions). This also applies to private resale. Buyers of a trademark-infringing watch risk having it confiscated in a customs or police check.

At MedoMods: every watch is sold as a mod. We don't use any third-party brand logos. The designs are inspired, not copied.

2. Warranty

A modified Seiko loses Seiko's manufacturer warranty. That's expected โ€” Seiko only warranties factory-original, unmodified watches.

What you get instead:

  • 2 years of warranty from the modder (with us: refund policy)
  • The NH35 movement is serviceable worldwide โ€” any watchmaker with Seiko experience can work on it
  • Replacement parts are widely available and inexpensive

3. Customs and import

Modified watches without third-party brand logos are not a customs problem. You only pay standard import VAT if the watch ships from outside the EU.

MedoMods ships from Germany โ€” no additional charges within the EU.

Be careful with sellers in third countries (China, Hong Kong): if watches carrying counterfeit brand logos are shipped from there, customs will seize the shipment and you lose your money.

4. Resale

You're free to resell your mod privately at any time โ€” on Chrono24, eBay, or in enthusiast forums. Important:

  • Describe it clearly as a mod, not as an original
  • Name the modder's brand (e.g. "MedoMods Datejust Style Mod")
  • Include the original packaging and certificate, if you have one

5. Insurance

You can add your mod to your home contents insurance, just like any other watch. For higher values (roughly โ‚ฌ500+), we recommend a separate jewelry/valuables policy.

6. Is modding "morally okay"?

A fair question. The watch community is split:

  • Pro-mod: "It's your watch, do what you want." Modding has a long tradition (Speedmaster mods, Submariner service mods).
  • Anti-mod: "You're disrespecting the original brand." Some collectors view mods critically.

The truth: mods are their own hobby with their own aesthetic. They don't compete with originals โ€” they serve an entirely different market, people who want looks, mechanics, and personalization without luxury prices.
