Seiko Land-Dweller Mod White

White on white, and still not plain: the dial of the white LAND MOD carries a honeycomb pattern of elongated hexagons that only reads as relief once you look closely. Twelve is marked by a triangle, six and nine by Arabic numerals and every other hour by a baton, each one steel-coloured like the pair of baton hands. The angular case with its fluted bezel runs into the steel bracelet without a step, while three o'clock is given over to the date.

Bright, but not empty

From a distance the dial looks plain and bright; come closer and each cell breaks the light a little differently. Because markers, numerals and hands share one steel tone, no colour accent pulls attention away from the pattern. The same honeycomb dial also exists in the range in dark green and in light blue; the white version is the most reserved of the three and ties itself least to any colour you wear. To us it suits office days in a white shirt and Saturdays in a grey jumper equally well.

One size, one line

This watch comes in a single size: 39 mm case diameter. Its stainless steel case stands 11.5 mm tall, which lets the white dial disappear beneath a cuff when needed without the watch going unnoticed on the wrist. The fluted steel bezel frames the honeycomb relief, and below it the flat links with their narrow polished centre links continue the line of the case.

The technical side

White honeycomb in an angular case

On a white ground, the honeycomb pattern of this watch shows only as a fine relief; the elongated hexagons stay light, while steel-coloured baton indices, a triangle at the top and the numerals 6 and 9 structure the dial, with the date appearing at 3 o'clock. The case is angular and runs seamlessly into the integrated link bracelet. You will find the same shape and pattern on the Land Mod - Ice Blue, there in a light blue that adds a bit more colour to the wrist. The Land Mod - Green stands apart more clearly: dark green honeycomb, light-filled indices and a seconds hand with an oval loop at its short end. Also light, but with a round case and a five-row bracelet, is the Date Mod Classic Mod - White Arabic; instead of honeycomb, its dial has fine grooves radiating from the centre and Eastern Arabic numerals at every hour.

The fluted bezel, sapphire crystal and NH35 automatic movement are common to all four. The Land models measure 39 mm, while the Date Mod is available in 36 mm, 39 mm and 41 mm. The white Land model is the plainest version of the honeycomb look.

White on white, readable only as relief: honeycombs against slate, royal green and grooves

From a distance the Land Mod White looks smooth; only up close does a relief of elongated hexagons appear, casting tiny shadows in side light. At twelve there is a triangle, the numerals six and nine are framed in steel, bars sit in between, and the slim stick hands with their thin seconds hand are steel-coloured, so without a coloured accent. The date sits to the right in a clear white window. The angular case runs without a step into the integrated bracelet, whose narrow centre links are polished while the flanks look brushed. The bezel is fluted; 39 mm.

Classic Mod Wimbledon works with darkness: a slate grey that turns almost black at the rim, green-outlined Roman numerals, a white triangle at twelve, a ring of numbers in steps of five and a flat date window. Date Mod Royal Green Arabic brings a strong green with silver characters at eleven hours, the three being left to the date, plus small light squares at the edge, a magnifier over the date and a three-row bracelet with half-round links. Classic Mod Green Arabic is green, covered with radiating grooves, and has no date window but a five-row bracelet. All three have round cases with lugs and diameters between 36 and 41 mm, while the white Land Mod exists only in 39 mm. Anyone who wants calm without contrast stays with the white; script in Arabic characters appears only on the two green ones, and the honeycomb of the white dial leaves out any script.
