Seiko Land-Dweller Mod Green

Dark green, laid out in cells: on the dial of the green LAND MOD elongated hexagons line up side by side, and depending on the light some fields look almost black, others bottle green. A triangle marks twelve, Arabic numerals stand for six and nine and batons for the rest; every marker has a steel-coloured frame and a light filling, and the pair of baton hands follows the same scheme. A fluted steel bezel surrounds it all, the date has its window at three o'clock, and this three-hand watch is driven by a Seiko NH35 automatic.

Measurements and movement

• With 39 mm across its stainless steel case and 11.5 mm in height, the green LAND MOD goes beneath a shirt cuff yet remains a presence when the sleeve rides up

What happens on the dial

Unlike a smooth surface, this one gives the eye something to do: the honeycomb relief covers the dial, and the light fillings of the markers stand out clearly against the dark ground. The seconds hand is light in colour and carries an oval eyelet at its short end, a small detail you only notice at second glance. The angular case runs into the bracelet without a step; its flat links have narrow, polished centre links that flash next to the outer ones.

Next to the white and the light blue

The same case and the same honeycomb pattern also come with a white and with a light blue dial. There the hands are plain steel-coloured; the green version is the darkest of the three and the one where markers and dial contrast most strongly. We see it with earth tones, tweed and dark denim, in autumn just as much as with a white shirt, where the green may stand as the only colour. The watch comes as described here, in one size.

Green honeycombs in an angular case, beside neighbours with a different pattern

The Land Mod Green wears a dark green on its dial, covered with elongated hexagons; between the cells the tone looks bottle green in one place and almost black in another, and a thin minute ring sits at the edge. The case is angular and flows without a step into a bracelet of flat links whose narrow centre links are polished; the flanks look brushed. The bezel is fluted, the size 39 mm.

Land Mod White and Land Mod Ice Blue carry the same honeycomb pattern in white and in pale blue; on the pale blue one the indices have a dark outline. Classic Mod Green Arabic comes from a different build: a round case with lugs, a five-row bracelet, a dial with fine grooves that radiate from the centre, silver characters at all twelve hours and no date. Across the Land watches the pattern, the case and the size stay the same, and only the colour and the fill of the indices change; with the Date Mod Classic, case, bracelet and dial change together, and it comes in three sizes.
