DAY MOD - BASALT ROMAN

Basalt is the colour that sits between black and grey without committing to either. The dial is a deep blue-grey (#53515e) that reads cool and mineral in daylight and drifts towards slate under a warm lamp. The DAY MOD Basalt Roman is a Seiko mod hand-assembled by MedoMods in Germany, running an automatic movement with a combined day and date display.

Movement

Inside is an automatic movement with a combined day-and-date complication. It winds itself from the motion of your wrist, so there is no battery to replace. Day and date share the window, which keeps two pieces of information inside a single glance.

Case and crystal

40 mm of stainless steel, a screw-down crown and 5 ATM water resistance — enough for rain, splashes and washing your hands without a second thought. A sapphire crystal sits over the dial and shrugs off the door frames and desk edges that mark softer glass. The exhibition caseback leaves the movement in view rather than sealing it away.

Dial and design

Roman numerals and baton markers share the dial. On a pale dial roman numerals tend to shout; on basalt they do not. The dark, faintly blue ground softens the contrast, so the numerals are read rather than stared at — you notice the shape of the characters instead of the glare around them. Super-LumiNova on the indices keeps the hours legible once the light goes.

On the wrist

40 mm is the diameter that works on a slim wrist and a broad one alike: present enough to be seen, flat enough to slide under a shirt cuff. The steel bracelet comes as President, Oyster or Jubilee, and the basalt dial stays quiet enough that the bracelet you pick is what sets the tone.
