Seiko Day-Date Style Fuchsia Roman

Five Roman numerals, five batons and a great deal of pink in between: the DAY MOD - FUCHSIA ROMAN is built around a smooth dial in a strong pink that marks the even hours at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 with pale, steel-coloured numerals. Roman numerals on strong pink

On a pale dial, Roman numerals are dark marks; here the relationship is turned around. The numerals shine out of the saturated pink, and the gap in brightness traces every serif sharply, so that even the stroke-heavy VIII stays countable. Slim baton markers stand at the odd hours 1, 5, 7, 9 and 11: the numerals set the classical tone, the batons are there for the quick read. The markers carry Super-LumiNova and keep the dial legible long after the pink has turned black in the dark. The baton hands are kept dark with a pale fill, with a hair-thin dark hand counting the seconds, and the date at 3 o'clock sits beneath a magnifying lens that makes it larger.

Fuchsia is the preselected one among the dial colours that the swatches on this page let you move between. Of its two nearest relatives it is the loudest: the blue-grey version carries the same pale numerals on a dark, reserved ground, while the berry-red one pairs a dark red-violet with anthracite numerals. On the wrist

The 40 mm of the stainless steel case are deliberately judged so that the colour carries without ruling the wrist. The Jubilee bracelet, with its five rows and polished centre links, sparkles a little more than a plain steel band and lifts the pink another notch; at the same time the steel cools the warmth of the colour. On the arm the watch lies flat and quiet: the pink flashes when a cuff slides back, then disappears again. We see it with a white shirt, with denim and with grey knitwear, and on a bare arm in summer in any case.

Movement, crystal and crown

Behind the pink sits an NH35, an automatic movement that also shows the date. Your arm winds it as it moves, the crown does so by hand when needed, and the seconds stand still for as long as the crown is pulled. Lay the pink watch on its face and a window in the case back puts the movement on show. A sapphire crystal guards the dial against scratches, and the crown screws down.
