Seiko Day-Date Style Sand Beige Roman

Beige with a tinge of rosé, and on it a drawing in anthracite: the DAY MOD - SAND BEIGE ROMAN has the lightest dial among its nearest relatives and wears dark numerals all the same. Roman figures mark the even hours from 2 to 10, with baton indices standing between them; both are anthracite, and dark too are the baton hands with their pale filling and the thin seconds hand. The weekday and the date both advance, with the weekdays shown in English. The smooth dial is framed by a fluted, steel-toned bezel on a 40 mm case of 316L stainless steel, which sits on a five-row link bracelet. The NH35 automatic places the date at 3 o'clock beneath a magnifier.

A beige that scatters light

Sand beige is a warm, faintly greyed beige with a rosy slant. In daylight it appears bright and dry, under lamplight perceptibly earthier. It does not throw light back, it disperses it, and that soft diffusion shapes the character of the watch; as the dial is smooth, it stays the same from every angle. The sapphire crystal above is colour-neutral, so the sand tone reaches you unaltered. This page opens on sand beige; behind the swatches lie the other dial colours of this selection.

Fine serifs instead of loud numerals

The Roman figures at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 draw the classical line, the strokes at 1, 5, 7, 9 and 11 keep the reading brisk and matter-of-fact. Because beige yields less contrast than white or black, the serifs appear finer, almost as if drawn: the numerals do not call out, they lie unhurried on the surface. The dark hands with a pale filling take up that restraint. When the light dwindles, the luminous material on the indices steps in, and the date has a window of its own complete with magnifier.

Stainless steel in 40 mm is a diameter that works out on slim and on broader wrists alike without claiming attention. The bracelet of five link rows with polished centre links frames the warm surface coolly and crisply, and with its fine links it comes across as rather formal. The crown screws down.

What sand beige goes with

Beige is easier company than one thinks: it gets on with brown and olive, with denim, with any cream or stone tone, and it does not come across as cold in the process. That is why we see the sand beige one with linen, suede and pale summer fabrics just as much as with a grey suit. Its two nearest relatives are identical in build and distinctly darker, one in deep blue-grey with pale numerals, one in berry red with dark ones. With the berry-red one the sand beige shares the dark numerals, and among the three it is by a distance the lightest.

Beneath the sand tone sits the NH35, an automatic movement with date. It winds itself through the motion of your wrist; if you like, you help it along by hand via the crown, and while you set the time the seconds hand stands still. Through the exhibition back the rotor can be observed at work.
