Seiko Day-Date Style Hunter Green Roman

This green keeps to itself: in low light the smooth dial of the DAY MOD - HUNTER GREEN ROMAN looks almost black, and only by a window does the dark green open up, without turning loud. On it lie pale, steel-coloured Roman numerals and batons, around it a fluted bezel and a case in 316L stainless steel of 40 mm. Next to the dark dial the five-row steel bracelet looks brighter than it would beside a silver one. The weekday and the date both advance, with the weekdays shown in English.

A colour that gets along

Hunter green is a colour that agrees with a great deal. It stands well against brown, navy, grey and charcoal, where a loud green would quarrel with all of them, and depending on the clothes it reads as formal or relaxed. That is why we see the watch with a tweed jacket as much as with a waxed coat or a dark suit; in the office it is noticed only at second glance.

Pale numerals stepping out of the dark

On a silver dial Roman numerals announce themselves; here they surface. In dim light you catch only their pale outlines floating above the green, and the brighter it gets, the more clearly the lettering parts from the ground. Five numerals, II, IV, VI, VIII and X, alternate with slim batons at the odd hours, which keep the picture calm. The markers carry Super-LumiNova, and the near-black green is the ground that flatters it: after dark the glow stands by itself instead of bleeding into a bright dial. Dark batons with a pale core serve as hands, and a dark thread counts the seconds; where the third hour would sit, a magnifier shows the date.

40 mm of steel under sapphire

The stainless steel case is 40 mm across, a measure that neither gets lost on a slim wrist nor overhangs a broad one. Above the dial sits a sapphire crystal that takes the daily knocks without collecting the fine scratches which dull a dark face. The crown screws down. Five rows of links, polished down the middle, make up the Jubilee bracelet, which lands midway between dressy and sporty.

The drive is the business of an NH35, an automatic that also turns the date. As long as you wear the watch it runs; after a break a few turns of the crown get the movement going again, and the seconds freeze while the time is being set. The case back is glazed and leaves the movement on view.

Two Roman versions are built almost identically to this one; the difference lies in the dial. One is a dark blue-grey and carries the same pale numerals, the other berry-red with dark anthracite numerals. If you like things dark but want colour instead of grey, green is the answer. Hunter green, no sunburst: dark surface, light Roman numerals

A dark green fills the dial, even and without rays, without grain and without any gradient. Against this deep surface stand brightly gleaming steel numerals in Roman form and, between them, slim light bars; the numerals sit roughly at 2 and 10, the bars at 1 and 11. Both are the lightest thing on the dial and read at first glance. The hands are dark with a pale fill; against the green it is mainly this fill that stands out, and the seconds line gets lost in the dark. The window at 12 o'clock carries lettering, and the date at 3 o'clock lies under a magnifier. At the edge a thin ring runs around the dial, around the glass a fluting, case and bracelet stay steel-coloured, and in the middle of the five-row bracelet the polished links gleam.

Day Mod Berry Roman has the same smooth layout in dark red-violet, but puts dark numerals on the ground, so the drawing recedes. Day Mod Vanilla Roman brings a light yellow with gold-coloured Roman numerals. Day Mod Ocean Blue is the closest relative in build: dark surface, steel-coloured numerals, but with a sunburst finish, light-filled steel hands and a bracelet with three rows. Smooth and with dark hands are Hunter Green, Berry and Vanilla; Ocean Blue differs in both. Anyone who wants a dark dial with clear, light lettering and no play of gloss meets the calmest case in Hunter Green. The case measures 40 mm on all of them, and the same movement works beneath the sapphire glass.
