The DAY MOD Hunting Green Roman carries a dial mixed so deep it holds more shadow than colour: #034231, the tone of a pine wood an hour before dusk. Under a lamp it passes for black. Movement

Inside sits an automatic movement with a combined day and date complication, so the weekday and the date sit together on the dial. Nothing needs winding by hand; wearing the watch keeps it running. The exhibition caseback leaves the movement on view, which is not a given at this price.

Case and crystal

A 40 mm stainless steel case, the diameter that neither disappears on a slim wrist nor overhangs a broad one. Sapphire crystal sits above the dial and takes the daily knocks without collecting the fine scratches that dull a dark face. The crown screws down and the case is rated 5 ATM, so rain, handwashing and a splash at the sink are non-events.

Dial and design

Roman numerals behave differently on a ground this dark. On a silver dial they announce themselves; here they emerge. In low light you catch only their pale outlines floating over the green, and as the light rises the lettering separates from the background rather than sitting flat on it. Slim baton markers fill the spaces between the numerals and keep the layout calm instead of crowded. The markers carry Super-LumiNova, and the near-black green is exactly the ground that flatters it: after dark the glow stands on its own instead of bleeding into a bright dial.

On the wrist

Hunting green is a colour that agrees with things. It sits well against brown, navy, grey and charcoal, where a vivid green would fight all of them, and it reads as formal or casual depending on what it is worn with. Choose the bracelet to match: President for the dressier read, Oyster for the sportier one, Jubilee for the middle ground. Against the dark dial the steel looks brighter than it ever would beside silver.
