Carré Mod - Gold

Gold-coloured from the bezel to the last link: the CARRÉ MOD - GOLD shows the square shape of the series in a yellow-gold tone. Eight visible screws sit on the smooth bezel with its rounded corners, and beneath it lies a white dial with black Roman numerals at all twelve hours and blue sword hands. The five-row link bracelet is polished and kept in the same gold tone as the case of 904L stainless steel. A blue cabochon in the crown, a Seiko TMI VD78 quartz movement and two sizes, 27 mm and 31 mm, complete the watch.

Yellow-gold tone on stainless steel

The colour is a yellow-gold finish on 904L stainless steel. Because case, bezel, crown and bracelet all carry the same tone, the watch looks self-contained and more like a piece of jewellery than an instrument. Two sisters are built alike but coloured differently: one in rose-gold colour, the other steel-coloured. The gold-coloured one is the warmest and most eye-catching of the three.

Black on white, blue as the accent

The dial is smooth and white and does without any lettering. Twelve Roman numerals in black run along the edge and enclose a square minute track that takes up the shape of the case. Because the dial is angular, the numerals stand closer than on a round watch, and the area below the centre stays free. The blue sword hands stand out clearly against the white; next to the gold tone, the blue seems stronger to us than it would in a steel-coloured case.

Screws, edges, crown

The bezel carries eight visible screws, two on each side. The corners of the case are rounded, which makes the square look soft. A blue cabochon sits in the crown and echoes the colour of the hands. Sapphire crystal protects the dial and is scratch-resistant, and the glass back on the reverse lets you see the movement. Water resistance: 5 ATM.

How it wears

The bracelet runs out of the case almost without a step, and its five rows of staggered links follow the wrist. It closes with a butterfly safety clasp that lies flat. In 27 mm the watch stays reserved, in 31 mm it shows more presence; both still fit under a sleeve. We see gold colour on the wrist with black, cream and dark blue, with an evening dress as much as with jeans and a white shirt, and ideally next to jewellery in the same yellow tone.

Drive

The Seiko TMI VD78, a quartz movement from Japan, provides the drive. Depending on use, its battery is good for up to 36 months.

Yellow gold in a square, blue hands on top

On the Carré Mod Gold everything carries the same yellow-gold tone: the smooth bezel with rounded corners and eight visible screws, the case, the crown and the five rows of staggered, polished links. The dial is white and smooth; black Roman numerals mark every hour, and a square minute track repeats the shape of the case on the inside, leaving the centre open. The sword-shaped hands are blue, and so is the stone in the crown; against the warm metal this blue stands out most clearly. There is no date window, and no seconds hand can be made out in the photo. That keeps the surface calm, and the gold tone sits as well with dark fabric as with a light shirt.

Only the metal shifts in Carré Mod Rose Gold, with a rosy glow, and Carré Mod Steel, with a cool grey; dial, numerals, hands, the VD78 quartz movement and the two sizes of 27 and 31 mm are shared by all three, the smaller one sitting more discreetly and the larger covering more of the wrist. A different build comes with Seiko Mod Ladies Champagne: a round two-tone case of 26 mm, clear set stones all around the gold-coloured bezel, a sunburst golden-yellow dial with light baton indices, an enlarged date window and a bracelet with steel-coloured links and gold-coloured centre links. Its hands end in a circle and a dot instead of blue swords. Anyone looking for gold as a closed, plain surface without a date stays with the square; anyone who prefers a round dial with sparkle on the bezel looks to the Champagne watch.
