Carré Mod - Rose Gold

Rose-gold in tone from the case to the last bracelet link, and square with it: the CARRÉ MOD - ROSE GOLD shows a smooth white dial with twelve black Roman numerals, crossed by two blue sword hands. Its smooth bezel, rounded at each corner, is fixed with eight screws left in plain view, and the crown ends in a blue cabochon. Power comes from a quartz movement, and you pick the case as 27 mm or 31 mm.

Roman numerals on a square

The dial is white and smooth, with no lettering and no date window. Because the Roman numerals trace a square and not a circle, the ones along the sides sit tighter than a round dial would allow. They surround a finely printed square minute track, around which the two blue hands for hours and minutes turn; the dial shows no seconds hand. Nothing is printed under the centre, which keeps the white field calm and the time quick to read.

Screwed bezel and a case in 904L stainless steel

Rose-gold tone covers the whole 904L stainless steel case. Its bezel is smooth, square with softened corners, and carries eight screws. The white dial sits under sapphire crystal that is scratch-resistant; turn the watch over and a pane of glass in the back shows the movement. Water resistance: 5 ATM.

Five rows, polished

Made of 904L stainless steel, the five-row bracelet is polished to match the case. Its links are staggered from row to row, a little like brickwork, and the first row joins the case with barely a step. Underneath the wrist, a butterfly safety clasp folds flat. Choose 27 mm for a reserved look or 31 mm for more presence; a shirt cuff slides over either, because both stay slim.

VD78 quartz inside

The rose-gold-tone case houses the Seiko TMI VD78, a quartz movement from Japan. Winding is not needed, and depending on use one battery runs for up to 36 months.

How it compares, and when we would wear it

The gold-tone sister shares every part of the construction, colour aside; the rose-gold-tone version looks warmer and, to our mind, a touch softer against the skin. If you prefer mother-of-pearl with set stones and a fluted bezel, another ladies' model offers that, driven by an automatic movement and fitted with a date. We see the Carré Mod over a blouse at the office or with chunky knitwear at the weekend, in 27 mm on slim wrists and in 31 mm otherwise; next to rose-gold-tone jewellery it blends in without drowning it out.

Rosy metal around a white square

Put the Carré Mod Rose Gold next to its siblings and the metal is what you see first: bezel, case, crown and bracelet share a rose-gold colour from end to end, and the bracelet is made of five polished rows that run offset against each other. The bezel stays smooth, with rounded corners and two screws on each side. On the white, smooth dial the twelve hours appear as black Roman numerals, while inside, a square minute track surrounds an empty centre. The sword-shaped hands and the stone in the crown are blue; against the rosy ground that adds a cool note which returns on the dial. The photo shows neither a date nor a seconds hand, and since no window interrupts the surface, the watch reads very calmly. The crown sits in an angular setting that echoes the squareness of the case and frames the blue stone.

Carré Mod Gold and Carré Mod Steel are identical in construction apart from the metal colour, yellow-gold on one and steel on the other, both with the same VD78 quartz movement and made in both 27 and 31 mm. Round and at 31 mm, by contrast, comes Women's Baby Blue: a light blue sunburst dial with raised silver Roman numerals, a triangle marking the twelve, the date window at 3 o'clock along with a fluted steel bezel without screws, a crown without a stone, a steel-coloured bracelet with five rows and an automatic movement. The square suits anyone who wants one uniform rosé tone without a date; the round blue feels airier and carries its numerals larger.
