Seiko Day-Date Style Mahogany Roman

Close to black in the shade, a dark red-brown once light reaches it: that is how the dial of the DAY MOD - MAHOGANY ROMAN behaves. Pale, steel-toned Roman numerals sit on it at the even hours from 2 to 10, slim batons keep them apart, and the dark baton hands only turn legible against the red-brown thanks to their light filling. The weekday and the date both advance, with the weekdays shown in English. A fluted bezel, a 40 mm case in 316L stainless steel and a bracelet of five link rows wrap the colour in steel; the NH35 automatic supplies the drive, and the date stands under a magnifier.

Mahogany is meant literally here. The surface is smooth, without any sunburst, and gives away its warm, wine-like undertone only under direct light; indoors it stays near espresso. Anyone after a watch that keeps still in a meeting room and shows character outdoors will find it in this shade. Pale numerals on a dark ground

Roman numerals stand at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10, strokes at 1, 5, 7, 9 and 11. On a light dial they would form a hard block; on the red-brown they come across as thin pale lines that hover above the colour and soak up any warm light in the room. The seconds hand is thin and dark and hardly pushes forward, which leaves the surface its peace. Luminous material on the markers takes over as soon as darkness falls.

Steel around the red-brown

A 40 mm stainless steel case with a screw-down crown and 5 ATM water resistance. The steel is 316L, and the fluting of the bezel travels once around the full circle. Each metal part keeps its steel tone, so the red-brown remains the single colour on the watch. Five rows of links form the bracelet, the centre links polished; beside the warm dial this fine pattern comes across almost as jewellery. Sapphire lies over the dial, and scratches that quickly make a dark surface look dull have a hard time on it.

The movement behind it

Behind the mahogany dial runs the NH35, an automatic movement that also shows the date. The motion of your wrist keeps it going, and there is no battery to change; pull the crown and the seconds hand halts for setting, and winding by hand works as well. The date has a window to itself.

On the wrist and beside its relatives

A watch of 40 mm slips under a cuff and still holds its ground over a knitted sleeve. Because the dark dial makes it read a shade more compact than the figure implies, we see it well placed on slimmer wrists too. Two relatives are built the same way and depart in colour only: one with a dial in dark blue-grey, one with a berry-red dial and dark numerals. The mahogany one is the warmest of the three and goes well with brown, beige, tweed and leather.
