Seiko Day-Date Style Sand Gold

The DAY MOD - SAND GOLD sets a pale golden-yellow sunburst dial into a steel-coloured 40 mm case. The shade sits closer to champagne than to jewellery gold, so it reads warm against the cool metal without turning loud. Slim baton indices in steel-coloured frames mark the hours, while dark grey stick hands and a thin seconds hand of the same grey travel above them. The weekday and the date both advance, with the weekdays shown in English. The date appears at 3 o'clock, enlarged by a magnifier, and a fluted bezel closes the picture.

Sand gold in changing light

The sunburst finish makes the dial move with the light: indoors it leans almost beige, outdoors it turns into a clear golden yellow. The pale indices stand out through their steel-coloured surrounds rather than through brightness, and the dark grey hands supply the contrast such a light dial needs to stay readable. Super-LumiNova on the indices glows on once the room goes dim.

Steel from bezel to bracelet

Case, bezel and bracelet share one steel tone, and the case itself is 316L stainless steel. The three-row President bracelet carries polished centre links that pick up the ridges of the bezel, while the outer rows stay quieter. The golden dial sits beneath sapphire crystal, and on the reverse an exhibition back shows the NH35 at work. The crown screws down.

Movement and date

An NH35 automatic movement with a date display does the work. Arm movement keeps the mainspring topped up, the crown adds a manual wind when the sand gold dial has rested for a while, and pulling that crown out halts the grey seconds hand for setting.

On the wrist

We see the sand gold dial next to warm fabrics and colours: linen, denim, camel, olive, tan leather. At 40 mm it has presence yet still slides under a shirt cuff, and the steel-coloured bracelet keeps it nearer the office than the evening event. If you want a light watch that is neither white nor yellow gold, this is where you end up.
