Seiko Day-Date Style Golden Yellow

Saturated yellow, ringed by steel: the DAY MOD - GOLDEN YELLOW sets a smooth, strongly yellow dial into a steel-toned case of 316L stainless steel that measures 40 mm and wears a fluted bezel. Pale baton indices in steel-toned frames divide the hours, dark grey baton hands run above them together with a thin dark grey seconds hand, and the lettering on the dial is black. The weekday and the date both advance, with the weekdays shown in English. A link bracelet of three rows with a polished middle hangs from the case; inside runs the NH35 automatic, whose date stands at 3 o'clock beneath a magnifier.

Mustard, ochre, no neon

Yellow is harder to get right on a dial than any other colour: mixed cool it tips into green, lifted too bright it turns lemon. This one stops in the middle with a lean towards ochre and mustard, saturated enough to flare up in the sun and deep enough never to look like a highlighter. Lamplight makes it warmer, daylight clearer, and beside the steel it behaves more like warm metal than like a fashion shade. Because the ground stays light, everything dark stands on it razor-sharp, the black lettering just as much as the dark grey hands. The baton indices are applied, pale inside and coated with luminous material; on the yellow they read like tidy punctuation instead of hard contrast. Thanks to the magnifier, the date at 3 o'clock remains recognisable at arm's length too.

What yellow gets up to on the wrist

On the arm, golden yellow can do something black and silver are not capable of: it catches light. Next to denim and a white shirt it comes over as a deliberately placed accent, next to navy, camel or grey marl as almost traditional. The tone descends from the same family as brass, linen and late-afternoon sun and therefore clashes with far less than one assumes. We see the yellow one on people who leave other jewellery off and let the dial do the talking.

40 mm as a stage

Stainless steel at 40 mm is the fitting stage for a dial this saturated: wide enough to hand the yellow real surface, and restrained enough not to roll over a slim wrist. Case, fluted bezel and bracelet share a single steel tone. The link bracelet has three rows, the middle one polished, and its formal line grounds the loud yellow. The crown screws down. Over the dial sits sapphire crystal, which lets the colour through unaltered and leaves the scratches from door frames and table edges little to grip.

The power comes from the motion of your wrist and not from a battery, and through the exhibition back you can watch the rotor at work. The NH35 advances the date, also takes hand-winding via the crown and stops the seconds hand during setting.

Yellow, green, grey: the same build three times

Two close relatives are put together exactly like the yellow one: same case, same bezel, same bracelet of three rows. One shows a light pistachio green and steel-toned hands with a pale filling, the other a mid-grey dial with a sunburst finish. The yellow one is the loudest of the three; its dial is smooth like the green one's, its hands are dark grey like those of the grey one.
