Seiko Day-Date Style Deep Green

The DAY MOD - DEEP GREEN carries a dark green dial, smooth and unbrushed, on which pale baton indices in steel-coloured frames mark the hours. Indoors the green moves close to black; in daylight it shows its colour. Above the green run stick-shaped hands in dark grey, followed by a thinner seconds hand of that grey, and on the right a magnifier enlarges the date at 3 o'clock. The weekday and the date both advance, with the weekdays shown in English. Steel colour covers the case, the fluted bezel and the three-row bracelet, and the diameter measures 40 mm.

Green that only turns green in the light

Dark dials swallow light, and this one does it thoroughly: at a desk it looks dark and calm, by a window the saturation comes through without the surface starting to shine. There is no brushed pattern; the green stays one calm, smooth plane. The pale indices in their steel-coloured frames stand on it all the more clearly, and Super-LumiNova on those very indices keeps them visible even when nothing of the green can be made out any more.

Batons instead of numerals

Where other dials set numerals, this one sets baton after baton. That separates it from a related model whose dial is dark green as well but which carries Roman numerals and a five-row bracelet; a second shares its indices and bracelet yet has a grey sunburst dial. 40 mm in steel

A green this dark visually shrinks the case; its 40 mm wins that back, so the watch holds its place on the wrist without taking it over. The 316L stainless steel case has sapphire crystal in front and an exhibition window behind, that leaves the NH35 on view. Along the three rows of the President bracelet, the middle one is polished and mirrors what the fluted bezel sets out. The crown screws down.

The movement behind it

Under the green runs the NH35, an automatic that adds a date display to the time. Wrist motion winds its mainspring; after a longer rest a few turns of the crown wind it manually, and with the crown pulled the grey seconds hand halts so the time can be set.

Office and Saturday

We see the Deep Green as the more interesting alternative to a black dial: unobtrusive enough for the office, colourful enough for jeans and a field jacket. With the date on the dial and a steel bracelet, one watch does for working days and days off. The dark grey hands stay deliberately low-key, so nothing on the dial competes with the green except the pale indices. It goes well with brown, beige, navy and washed denim. Under a shirt cuff the fluted bezel is the first thing to show; the green follows as soon as the watch slips out.

Almost black indoors, green outdoors: Deep Green against blue and white

Dark green and without any brushing: the dial barely reflects, indoors it looks almost black, and only in daylight does the green come forward. There are no rays; the surface stays evenly dark. Light strokes with steel rims mark the hours; windows replace the indices at 12 and 3 o'clock. The dark grey hands and an equally dark grey thin seconds hand wear a muted grey that suits the ground. On the right the date sits behind a magnifier and forms, in a light window, the brightest spot of the right-hand half of the dial. The fluted bezel and a bracelet of three rows, polished in the middle, keep the watch in steel throughout. This very restraint gives the dial its depth: apart from the light indices and the date window there is no second accent. The light indices are therefore the most important points of orientation on the dial.

Day Mod Dove Blue likewise has a smooth dial and dark grey hands, but its blue is mid-light and grey-tinged, and the indices carry a bluish shimmer. Day Mod White turns everything round: creamy white dial, steel-coloured indices, dark hands with a pale inlay. The lighter blue with sunburst brushing and steel-coloured hands is offered by Day Mod Baby Blue. Against the green, both blues look more open, because they lack the depth of the dark green. Anyone who wants a dark dial without gloss will come closest here; dove blue lies in between in brightness, white and baby blue at the light end. Case, movement (NH35 automatic), sapphire crystal and 40 mm are shared by all four.
