The Date Mod Classic Purple Roman is one of those dials that makes an immediate impression without shouting. Purple is rare in dress-sport watches and this particular shade — set against Roman numerals — has a quiet formality that works equally well dressed up or down. The Purple Roman Combination

Roman numerals are one of the oldest typographic choices in watchmaking, associated with formal timepieces long before Arabic numerals became the default. On a purple dial they shift away from stuffy into something more considered — a dial that has clearly been thought about rather than defaulted to. The result is a Seiko mod that stands apart from the sea of blue and black dials in the date-mod category.

Purple with a red cast, sunburst-brushed

The shade is a purple with a red cast, and under the sunburst finish it brightens at the centre while the rim stays darker. Roman numerals in silver tone occupy twelve and every even hour up to ten; the odd hours get slim batons, and only three is given over to the magnified date. Grey-inlaid hands of baton shape look calmer on the purple than on its two sisters with the same layout, whose dials are dark green and grey and whose hands are inlaid in a light tone.

NH35 behind the exhibition back

A Seiko NH35 automatic sits inside the purple watch. Its hacking function stops the thin seconds hand for as long as you are setting; hand-winding starts the watch without you having to wear it first, and approximately 41 hours of power reserve carry it across a weekend. At midnight the gear train advances the date mechanically, and what the purple front hides, the exhibition case back shows: the movement.

Steel as a frame for the purple

The purple is framed by a case of 316L stainless steel and a fluted bezel, both steel-coloured, the bezel adding bright edges. Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal lies over the purple; Super-LumiNova coats hands and indices, so both remain easy to read in darkness. The screw-down crown and 5 ATM water resistance mean normal daily life — rain and hand-washing — is not an issue. The bracelet counts five stainless steel rows, the centre ones polished: widely adjustable, held securely by the safety folding clasp.

Size on the wrist

Each of the three diameters is given excluding the crown. We see 36 mm on a slim wrist, where the purple sits like a small dab of colour, 39 mm with shirt and jacket, and 41 mm where the sunburst should have room.
